Joint Class
Joint Class at Coliseum Northside Orthopaedic Center is a program devoted to a successful joint replacement surgery and recovery. Joint problems are most often caused by osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, or from sports/repetitive use injuries. Most people find that the pain caused by joint problems gradually increases as time goes by, and they begin to give up active pursuits a little bit at a time.
The goal of the Joint Class is to give patients the knowledge and tools to make the transition from hospital to recovery, a smoother process. This process begins prior to surgery, when patients attend an educational session at Coliseum Northside Orthopaedic Center. The advantage to providing education in a group environment is that some patients ask questions that others might not have thought to ask. A unique feature of the Joint Class is that each patient is encouraged to choose a rehabilitative coach. This person can be a family member or friend, who will attend the pre-surgery education sessions with the patient and help the patient through rehabilitation.
Patients will learn about their surgery, what to bring to the hospital, what's going to happen in the operating room, what they will experience each day and how their pain will be controlled. They will learn up front what to expect and also what is expected of them. A home strengthening program is given to each patient to prepare them for surgery. These exercises condition the arms and legs, and are designed to build up muscle groups that help with mobility, temporary use of a walker or crutches, standing up and getting out of bed. Patients are then admitted for surgery and group rehabilitation begins the day after surgery is completed. Learn more about the Joint Class at Coliseum Northside Hospital...
